History of the Toronto Christian Creed
Officially on March 17th, 2014 and constructed over the weekend of March 14th-16th, 2014 (Purim Weekend), a movement called Christian Positive Space was birthed by Christian Pastor and Street Preacher David Lynn. This movement gave the accronym (BETFC) to the Christian Community reflecting its primary beliefs: Bible Believers, Evangelicals, Traditionalists, Families of Faith, Christians (BETFC).
David Lynn was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 13th, 1980, and raised at the People's Church, a non-denominational Church that focuses on the essentials of the Christian Faith. In his early 20's, he attended Tyndale University and Seminary where he received a Master's Degree in Theology. He has Pastor'd in 3 Churches, planted 1, and is behind many influential movements in our nation.
He realized that in order for Christian's to establish Positive Space and stand together, there needs to be an identification of what Christian's truly believe in such a way that is relevant to today's cultural climate. Each creed that was formed in the past was due to a cultural problem that was occuring with in the Christian Community. Today, there are so many alliances that are formed within the Christian community that have only watered down the message of the Bible. David Lynn wanted to see unity, but a unity that is based upon solid Biblical Truths that tackle issues that are facing Christianity today. So looking at his Statement of Faith and examining others, he reworked a creed that enables Christians of various denominations to stand together on Biblical Truths while not compromising either his faith nor the Christian faith at large with cultural norms. At the same time, the creed bridges the gap with historically divisive issues like the gifts of the Spirit, water baptism, and Church authority that doesn't compromise, but allows room for dialogue.
What the Toronto Christian Creed is not!
The Toronto Christian Creed isn't an attempt to bring unity under false pretences. This is what many believe has happened within the Ecumenical Movement. In an attempt to unite believers together, the Ecumenical movement watered down everything in order to be inclusive-but then losing its Biblical Accuracy. Rather, this creed establishes bold truths that have previously been left out of many creeds like: Biblical Womanhood, Biblical headship, specific requirements for Eldership/Leadership, the calling to be born again and to be filled with the Holy Spirit and more. However, it leaves enough room for some distinctives yet forces a dialogue between denominations on some of these pertinent issues.
While it has been on the Christian Positive Space website since March 17th, 2014; It wasnt until November 21st, 2015 during the 2nd Stop Bullying Christian's Now Rally that David Lynn shared this with the Pastor's and Christians present from a variety of denominations to which they all agreed: AMEN!
David Lynn will be soliciting churches and Christians who were at the Rally and those who were not to see if they would publically state that the are in agreement to the Toronto Christian Creed in order to work better with each other within the Christian Community.
